ODG Syclone in Mexico

The ODG Syclone in Mexico makes one of its fastest personal best passes!

A few months back, we covered the story of Texas-based fabricator and grudge racer On D Gas Racing building a twin-turbo Coyote powered GMC Syclone. The truck is running on a Holley Dominator stand-alone. According to Shrek Motorsports, it’s built on a 5.2 block sleeved to a 5.0L running a dry sump with twin 76-79 Garrett turbos mounted in the bed. Both turbos breathe with custom-cut inlets into each of the bedsides. It has the stock diff with LSD in the front running on Bully Racing CV axles. The transfer case is a stock Borg Warner 4472 bolted to a 400 trans. The engine was set up to run on M1 methanol.

ODG’s first outing with the truck was in FL at Bradenton Speedway back in October 2024 at the Cleetus AWD Shootout. With virtually no track time and testing other than on the dyno and the streets outside the track at 3 AM the morning of their scheduled race, they took the Syclone for its maiden voyage on a track. They took a loss but have since slowly been making progress in the setup and getting the truck much more dialed in on the track.

The most recent news from ODG is attending Memerkits Posada in Monterrey, Mexico, where they have claimed the truck to have done its fastest pass to date.

This is our second year coming to the Memerkits Posada here in Monterrey, Nuevo León and this time we decided to bring our syclone that won the OTM finals. With literally only 2 passes we managed to break our PB for this truck on a not so great surface but nonetheless still crazy for this truck! We’re excited to see what else it can do with more adjusting and more testing!

Before you get too excited, you’re not going to see any posted times. These are grudge race events where no times are posted or blurred out, and the details of builds are usually kept relatively hush due to the money and bets associated with this type of racing. From our guess, this truck is hooking into the 4 to 5-second range in a 1/8th mile, making it a 7 to 8-second truck in the quarter mile.

Hot Wheels Syclone 2025

Get ready, a new Hot Wheels Syclone 2025 mainline will be coming soon! We dont have any detailed information yet on the release dates. The limited pictures on the internet show the new colorway in a purple or violet color for the main body color, some teal striping, green tinted windows, and white cladding.

Ever since Hot Wheels released the GMC Syclone, it has been a popular diecast among collectors and seemingly sometimes very hard to find in the store. Rest assured, you will most likely be able to buy this mainline release all over the various marketplaces. Keep an eye on eBay, as you usually will start to see unspun versions for sale before the packaged release is available.

SyTySoGT Cladding Removal

One of the most distinguishing features of the Syclone, Typhoon, and Sonoma GT is the aggressive style cladding that appears on the trucks. The cladding gave the trucks a much wider and lower stance compared to the rest of the S-Series lineup. The trucks use a variety of mounting pucks, support brackets, rivets, washers, and screws to fit and hold the cladding to the body.

Some pieces are interchangeable between the three trucks. These pieces are the front and rear bumper cover and support. For both the Syclone and Typhoon, the only pieces that are interchangeable between the trucks are the front fender arches and door cladding. The remaining pieces on the Syclone and Typhoon from the under door cladding, rear arches, rear quarter and rear corner pieces are all unique to either the Sy or Ty and cannot be swapped. This is due to the pickup vs SUV body style and how the mounting tabs are located on the cladding. The Sonoma GT has less aggressive styled cladding that differs from both the Syclone and Typhoon altogether. It is held in place mostly with brackets, C-clamps, and screws.

With the trucks being over 30+ years old, the cladding is well known to have become brittle and easily broken. If you plan to fix or replace your cladding, the following schematics give a detailed view of the location of all of the mounting pucks, support brackets, rivets, washers, and screws.

If you plan to replace or fix your cladding and it still has the stock rivets, you WILL NEED to drill them out to remove the cladding. Sportmachines offers a complete cladding replacement kit for both the Syclone and Typhoon.

Due to how the cladding is attached to the trucks, some bolts are hidden behind other cladding pieces. This is mainly the front fender arches and rear corner pieces on all 3 of the trucks. If you are planning to remove all of the cladding, the best method is to start with the front and rear bumper assembly for any of the trucks. For the Sonoma GT, the remaining cladding can now be removed in any order.

For the SyTys, with the front and rear bumpers removed, you will want to remove the front fender arches. Then move to the rear quarter panel pieces (everything behind the door), starting with the arches and then the lower front quarter and corner pieces. Lastly, the lower door skirt and door cladding should be removed last.

NOTE: GM did not provide schematics for the door cladding piece. To remove, open the door. There are 5 rivets on the bottom of the cladding piece you will need to drill out. With the rivets removed, you can now remove the door cladding by sliding it in an upward motion and GENTLY pulling the bottom out so it will clear the mounting bracket.

New GM Tech Center

The GM Technical Center was inaugurated in 1956 as General Motors’s primary design and engineering center, located in Warren, Michigan. In 2000, the center was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and fourteen years later, it was designated a National Historic Landmark primarily for its architecture. Recently, GM has invested nearly $2 billion into its historic center, originally built by modernist architect Eero Saarinen. The new GM Tech Center is the latest addition to its design headquarters, over 1,000 workers sculpt clay models and and use VR to imagine car interiors.

The Wall Street Journal covered the story, and behold, 29 seconds into the video story, we see the Syclone Challenge truck parked on display in the lobby area of the center! In 1991, Vista Group, in coordination with GMC Truck Division, organized a promotional event called the “Syclone Challenge” to coincide with the launch of the GMC Syclone. The trucks used in the event were referred to as the “Syclone Challenge Trucks.”

The Syclone Challenge was part of a traveling roadshow, which was a marketing strategy for GMC dealers to showcase new truck models. This included a selection of show trucks, one of which was the famous 1989/90 Syclone LSR (Land Speed Record) truck. Attendees to the show could see up close the latest in GMC Trucks and take home various GMC Truck Motorsports literature, posters, and apparel. The display traveled the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) tour and allowed local GMC Truck dealer groups to showcase the new GMC Syclone pickup truck in an optimal high-performance setting – the quarter-mile track.

In 2009, GM declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy, and in doing so, they liquidated some of their collection of vehicles through auction. This included the PPG Syclone and one of the Syclone Challenge trucks. Today, GM still retains ownership of one of the trucks, which is seen here in the WSJ video. The other truck is privately owned (purchased through auction) and located in AZ.

SK Kustoms Goes 9s

On October 4, 2024, at Great Lakes Dragway in Wisconsin, Sean Krupa, owner of SK Kustoms in Chicago, IL launched his 1993 GMC Typhoon into the record books once again by breaking his previous recorded time of being the quickest single-turbo V6 AWD Typhoon in the world!

From Sean’s previous run last April of a 9.87 @ 139mph, he decided to push his Typhoon a little more this time around. After 3 runs, his fastest was a 9.39 @ 144mph this past weekend making it his new personal best as well as the fastest AWD V6 Typhoon currently in the world. Recently Sean did some dyno tuning which the truck pulled just shy of 800hp while fighting wheel slip on the barrels. It is estimated the truck is around 880whp.

The setup includes a 4.8L stroker Bowtie V6 with Brodix heads and a custom cam. A Precision GEN2 8080 Sportman turbo spools up the power which is tuned via a Holley EFI ECU. To handle the power this truck puts down, the transmission was upgraded to a 4L80-E which is still connected to the stock Borg Warner 4472 transfer case. Custom powdercoated 17″ CCW Classics wheels wrapped in 275/40 and 315/35 drag radials keeps Sean’s Typhoon stuck to the pavement.

Sean has been working over the years to progressively get this Typhoon to it’s current power level. When he’s not under the hood of his truck, he offers tuning services and his expertise in SyTys under his business name, SK Kustoms. As impressive as a 9.39 is, Sean mentions that the truck still has more in it and will be pushing it further with at least another 10psi of boost. His goals? An 8 second time slip. Another track date is planned for the near future and we’re amped to see Sean gather that 8.99 or better time!

11/8/24 UPDATE!

Sean has once again broken his own record with a time of 9.26@149MPH. While it wasnt the 8.99 he was aiming for, we still congratulate him for another insanely fast run!

9.26 146MPH Worlds Fastest V6 AWD Typhoon Record Reset…AGAIN!!! We fought traction with this 50° day but made a solid pass after numerous attempts!! Unfortunately broke the rear differential the last attempt for an 8! I can’t even be upset, 115k miles on that bad boy all stock diff!! We will fix and come back out swinging again next year!! As always thank you again for the support!!! Now time to prep this Beast for the make over this winter!

Coyote Swap Syclone

Texas-based car builder and social media influencer On-D-Gas Racing (ODG) has rolled out his latest build, a GMC Syclone. ODG is known for his wild and over-the-top truck builds, so it comes as no surprise when he announced what the plans were when he said it was something that most wouldn’t have initially thought to do. You see, ODG built a Coyote swap Syclone. But just doing a Coyote swap wasn’t enough. This setup is a bed-mounted twin-turbo monster that is still AWD and estimated to be able to hold 2500HP.

Now, we know what you’re thinking. Why take a GMC Syclone, rip out everything, and cut it up to do this kind of build? This particular Syclone is no stranger to the track and has had a life of hard racing even before ODG bought it. The truck used to be powered by an evenfire Bowtie V6 that ran the best of 9.2. The rear frame was boxed in, and a roll cage was built for safety. By the time ODG purchased it, it was a roller and already had been well-modified and cut into with very little chance it could ever go back to stock. It was a perfect platform for someone to push the boundaries and try something different. We think ODG has checked all the boxes.

Even if you’re not a Ford fanatic, the Coyote 5.0L V8 is an impressive motor. It has gone through some generational changes with the Gen 4 being the latest platform release. It’s an all-aluminum 32-valve DOHC V-8 that utilizes advanced features such as direct and port fuel injection, twin independent variable camshaft timing (Ti-VCT), high-flow aluminum cylinder heads, and 12:1 compression. The Coyote engine produces between 460-500HP in stock form. Of course, the setup on the ODG Syclone is far from stock, and we wish we could tell you all of the details, but we cannot. You see, this truck was built to race on the streets and in grudge matches on the track; therefore, no information is going to be publicly available for competitors to gain an advantage on the setup other than from photos and reels. Any video that has been released so far has been edited to conceal any of the build info when it comes to numbers.

From what we have seen in the videos, we can tell you that the truck is running on a Holley Dominator stand-alone. Both turbos breath with custom cut inlets into each the bedsides. It has the stock diff with LSD in the front running on Bully Racing CV axles. The entire front clip was modified to come off quickly and easily as 1-piece and is said to weigh about 80lbs.

Syclone Cladding Paint

When released, the GMC Syclone was dressed and sold with a matte finish on its cladding. A long debate within the community has always been the information regarding the Syclone cladding paint. Today, it is not uncommon to see cladding with different shades of black, fade to a chalky gray color, or even show signs of peeling. So is the cladding painted, or did it come in “raw” plastic? According to a past service bulletin, the answer is yes, the cladding was indeed purposely painted to obtain the matte finish.

The TSB bulletin below references the steps needed to obtain the matte finish of cladding when needing to be replaced on the truck. This information is provided as a reference ONLY and used at your discretion! It has been noted that owners following these steps with mixed results with cladding not matching perfectly with other pieces. With the variances and upgrades in paint products over the past 30+ years results may vary.

TSB BULLETIN 92-1073(A)
Dated April 1992

1) Inspect part for damage. Remove from the vehicle if necessary.
2) Wash with soap and water.
3) Solvent wipe with DX-330 grease and wax remover or equivalent.
4) Repair damage and featheredge the surrounding area with 240-320 grit paper.
5) For Gray molding: Apply one wet coat of DP Epoxy Primer.
For black molding: Apply one wet coat of DP-90 Epoxy Primer
If additional filling is needed, apply 2 coats of K-36 Acrylic Urethane Primer Surfacer
Finish sand with 400 grit, and re-apply 1 coat of epoxy primer
6) Apply 2-3 coats of K-36 or K-200 Primer surfacer mixed with K-248 Flexible hardener.
7) After primer surfacer is dry, block sand with 400-600 grit. Clean with DX-330 grease and wax remover.
8) For Gray cladding: Apply 2-3 coats Deltron Acrylic Urethane DAU 35552 mixed with DX-369 Flexible additive.
For Black cladding: Apply 2-3 coats of DDL9862 low gloss black paint. (Note: there’s no mention of flexible additive)
9) Allow to dry for 16 hours or force dry 40 minutes at 140 degrees.

Both this, and TSB 92-10-41 reference DDL 9862 as the refinish color for black cladding. It’s quite possible that both of these were superseded sometime in 93, but they will give you the correct original color. It comes out really flat… you’ll think the color is wrong, until you apply a good wax to it.

Radar Love

When it comes to the GMC Typhoon, the topic of color combination comes into play. Unlike the Syclone, which was only produced in midnight black, GMC offered the Typhoon in a small variety of colors for the 1992 and 93 model years. With black still being the most common color produced, most recognize the other common colors of frost white, apple red, bright teal, and forest green, with the unique, lower-production colors being aspen, royal blue, and garnet. However, most do not realize that during production, GM used two new colors for testing but never released them as available for the Typhoon. These colors are known as Radar Blue Metallic and Raspberry Metallic.

GMC used four Typhoons for paint testing, with two trucks being painted Radar Blue and the other 2 being Raspberry. The Radar Blue trucks were a 1992 and 1993, while the 2 Raspberry trucks are both 1992s. Interestingly, all four trucks do not have RPO codes for either color, so the glovebox decals indicate the trucks as being different colors. It was speculated that these trucks might have been repainted at the factory, but upon further inspection of one of the Radars and Raspberry trucks, these were not re-paints and went through the standard production paint process. There are no other outstanding features on all four trucks that were changed other than the paint. A fun fact about the Raspberry Typhoons is that they adopted the nickname “Barbie Trucks” by employees and can be found written on the PAS documentation. Both Radar Blue and Raspberry ended up being production colors that GM would use after both the Syclone and Typhoon ended production. You can find both colors on the 1994-97 S-Series trucks, predominately on the S10/Sonoma platform. Even on the S-Series trucks, both Radar Blue and Raspberry are considered to be uncommon colors.

Today, both Raspberry Typhoons still exist and are privately owned. Out of the 2 Radar Blue Typhoons, only the 1992 truck is still known to exist. Attempts have been made to locate the missing 1993 Radar Blue, and the last location was noted as in the UK in 2002. Pictures surfaced at one point of a wrecked “Radar”, but were later discounted as false due to the wrecked truck originally being a forest green color.

Radar Blue is a unique color as it will appear different hues of blue or purple depending on the amount of light exposure. In direct sunlight, the truck takes on a purple hue, while in the shadows and indirect light the Typhoon appears much more blue. One interesting area of the truck is that the cladding is a matte finish versus gloss. When the Syclone was produced, the cladding was painted with additives to give the cladding a matte finished look. The same formula appears to have been used for this truck. It is unknown if the missing 1993 was finished the same way or was a gloss finish like all 1993s are.

Recently at this years SyTys@Carlisle 2024 event, the 1992 Radar Blue was brought out into public and put on display for the first time since the early 2000s. The truck previously sat in a state of disrepair in Texas and was supposedly being restored. Occasionally pics would be posted, but nothing detailing any sort of progress. The owner passed away and the truck was able to be purchased from the family. It now resides in Florida, and since its purchase it has slowly received the attention it needed to properly maintain and fully restore it back fully to it’s former glory. While the restoration is not fully complete, the Radar Blue Typhoon is now drivable.
